Introduction

The root of both suffering and hope.

This website will focus on the role of art in the Great Migration, and how black artists were able to transform their sufferings into a lasting testament of their strength. This topic resonates with me because, to me, it shows that the most beautiful art can stem from the most painful of places and roots, and extend its influence all the way to today. The undying spirit of Black Americans’ hope during the Great Migration was made tangible in the art they created, which reflects their struggles, experiences, and pain.

I chose to create a curation for my project because I feel that art must be analyzed in order to be appreciated--and viewing it on a website is an easy and modern way of presenting that analysis. It simulates the experience of walking through a gallery and examining the plaques in a more intimate manner.

I want to present that, most importantly, the undying spirit of Black Americans’ hope for a better future made itself present and tangible through art, and they created testaments to both their suffering and their hopes. Above all, this project will demonstrate how the migrants did not just survive: they were able to live.
